Let's start with a joke: "Do you want your daughter to have sex education or sex training at school?" It is common to select from our kitbag of learning styles according to whether we expect an education or training situation. Unfortunately this polarisation of mode and associated choice of learning style is often counterproductive as frequently education and training go hand in hand - but we can get locked in one mode of learning. Let us look at some common situations. If you have children and have helped them to learn to ride a bicycle then you understand about the core role of both theory and practical experience for building confidence in some learning processes. It is inconceivable that, having explained the process of riding a bike to your child, she or he will just be able to ride without having ever been on a bike before. Or do you believe that reading a book and just watching someone drive a car will enable you to drive an automobile yourself? But for some reason, many traders seem to demote the role of either understanding new concepts or the value of experience in learning new styles or techniques for trading - both are often required in roughly equal measure. So learning style flexibility is required - the simultaneous use of learning styles appropriate for both understanding new concepts and gaining experience. There is a simple test available for each of us to work out which mode we might be over-emphasising to our detriment: if we are locked in just the educational mode we say things like: 'Just answer this simple question for I am sure there is a simple answer.', if we are locked in just the training mode we say things like: 'Never mind the theory, just give me an example.'. These types of single minded thinking save us either having to take in new concepts (and embarrass ourselves about our current beliefs) or allow us to just do the thinking but no work (and discover we did not fully understand). Gaining a more flexible style of learning. |
